Position Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of Curriculum Administration (Basic and Social Science Curriculum), the Course Manager is responsible for directing the administrative services required to develop, schedule and implement a range of courses in the Program in Medical Education (PME) and its Pathways curriculum. As a member of the Office of Medical Education (OME) curriculum administration team, the Course Manager ensures that these courses adhere to the academic and administrative standards and policies of the PME. This position represents the PME in course planning sessions and advises the course faculty leadership on educational strategies and formats. The Course Manager partners with faculty course directors on all elements of course development and implementation, including recruitment and orientation of faculty, development of course calendars, delivery of curriculum materials, and administrative oversight of the assessment process. The Course Manager plays an integral role in strategizing about curricular approaches, operationalizing course content design and establishing best practices for the courses in this innovative curriculum.

This position works with PME and OME administration and core course leaders to meet the educational standards and expectations of both the PME and the School's accrediting body, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The Course Manager also ensures that courses comply with the guidelines, standards, and processes required by the Office of the Registrar, Office of Learning Resources and Support, Office of Disability Services, and the Academic Societies, particularly regarding student performance, completion of academic requirements, and evaluation. The Course Manager is responsible for interpreting and advising faculty on educational program policies and applying these to individual case situations, ensuring that these policies are applied consistently and equitably.


Specific responsibilities of the Course Manager include:

  • Providing oversight of course administration and logistics, including recruitment of faculty, preparing course schedules, delivering curriculum materials in learning management systems, planning and executing course assessments in a virtual format, implementing the grading and evaluation process, tracking and supplying teaching effort data to inform teaching compensation, and providing statistical and informational course data as required;
  • Organizing and actively participating in curriculum planning meetings, including setting agendas, advising course faculty leadership on best practices and curricular approaches, and action item follow up;
  • Developing a practical understanding of and ensuring compliance with program processes, policies and guidelines;
  • Establishing and managing professional relationships with course leadership, faculty, staff and other stakeholders;
  • Anticipating course planning timelines and initiating appropriate communications and deadlines to ensure task completion;
  • Implementing educational technology solutions with an ability to acquire proficiency in emerging applications;
  • Engaging in continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives and best practices in curriculum management;
  • Collaborating with course director and OME Assessment and Evaluation faculty and staff to facilitate course review processes;
  • Working as a team with course management colleagues to share curricular information and approaches, and to delegate administrative support responsibilities to one course coordinator;
  • Providing information to the Associate Director relating to performance management of support staff;
  • Other duties as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience

  • Individual represents Harvard Medical School in course and curriculum planning sessions and is therefore required to have or have the potential to develop a deep understanding of the School’s MD program.
  • Impeccable judgment, discretion and confidentiality required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exemplary organizational and planning abilities, as well as intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Office and web applications.
  • Enthusiasm for educational innovation, new media and blended learning.
  • Flexibility and ability to respond positively to change in a dynamic academic environment.
  • Qualified candidates will possess a strong commitment to continuous process improvement and the ability to exercise independent leadership, prioritize multiple tasks, and work collaboratively with a team.

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option.
