Position Description
The Director of the Master of Science in Bioethics (MBE) program has leadership responsibility and accountability for the MBE program by overseeing all strategic and administrative aspects of the program. This includes developing a strategic plan for the MBE and executing that plan by recruiting, managing and mentoring faculty (including conducting annual career conferences for salaried MBE faculty), and monitoring and overseeing resource allocation. The Director of the MBE serves as a member of the Center’s leadership team, attending weekly or biweekly meetings to contribute to Center overall strategy, direction, and implementation. As Faculty in the Center, the Director of the MBE is expected to participate in the life of the Center for Bioethics, attending Center events, and including Center affiliation in your publications, reports and presentations.

Oversee all Curricular and administrative elements of the program, including:

  • Provide leadership and vision to the program staff, including the Associate Director of Education (who reports to the Center Director of Administration), program administrator and coordinators.
  • Develop, monitor and update the program curriculum
  • Regularly evaluating programs for educational and financial success. •
  • Recruit, manage and mentor faculty
  • Leading key annual events related to the Master’s program, including Orientation, Capstone Symposium, and Hooding Ceremony.
Serve as senior faculty in the Foundations sequence, and responsible for oversight of the capstone experience, including the seminar course and student mentor matching.

Oversee Recruitment and Admissions, including:

  • Travel to events and conferences to promote the MBE program nationally and internationally
  • Communicate with prospective students to recruit them
  • Oversee the annual updates of admissions materials, application and admissions rubric
  • Recruit program admissions committee members
Academic and student advising, including

  • Providing oversight to Associate Directors around student and academic advising, including faculty advising and matching
  • Provide oversight for the Associate Director for capstone mentor matching
  • Advise students on career and professional development opportunities
Academic Policy and Oversight

  • Work with the Dean and Associate Deans for Graduate Education to define programmatic policies and academic expectations for the program
  • Work with the Office of Graduate Education to participate in an external review of the program every 3-5 years, which includes developing a comprehensive report about the program and responding to reviewer comments.
Financial Oversight – Work with the Center Associate Director of Finance and Operations and the Office for Graduate Education Finance teams to develop and adhere to an annual business plan and budget, set tuition and enrollment targets, and collaborate on funding proposals to support the MBE program and students. The MBE program is expected to be revenue generating for the school with a net margin of approximately 50%.

Serve as a member of the HMS Masters Programs Senior Leadership

  • Serve on Master’s Governance and Oversight commit and attend meetings as called by Graduate Education Leadership (generally two to three times per month) to contribute to academic and administrative policy development, share best practices, collaborate to design resources across master’s programs
  • Serve on the Academic Progress and Review Board (APRB) attending meetings as scheduled by the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (generally 1-2 times/month) to discuss academic progress for students across the master’s programs and decide on any necessary academic remediation or disciplinary procedures for students at risk.
Basic Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree required.
  • Minimum 5 years active teaching experience in educational leadership role as demonstrated through teaching, mentorship, scholarship, and/or service/practice.
  • This position will require a concurrent ladder faculty appointment.
Additional Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Bioethics or related field preferred
  • 7-10 years of teaching experience preferred
  • Dedicated commitment to supporting and nurturing the career development of learners of diverse backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and operational excellence in a bioethics-related field or program
  • Experience with student and program assessment, faculty development, and continuous educational quality improvement
