Science is developing technologies for a range of serious unmet medical needs. We are unafraid to take difficult technical risks, secure in the knowledge that with a clear understanding of what we are doing and with support from powerful modern tools, more progress is possible than might be immediately obvious. Regardless of role or team, the two most important factors we look for in a candidate are evidence of exceptional ability and the addition of positive energy to the group. As a small, early stage team in a largely unstructured environment, the ability to independently orient yourself to the problems that need to be solved and then follow through is essential.

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Optical Engineer to join our Optics team. You will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and testing optical and optomechanical systems and components for our innovative medical devices. You will work closely with an exceptional team of optical engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, microfabrication engineers, software engineers, neuroscientists, and clinicians dedicated to using cutting-edge technologies to make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients worldwide. The ideal candidate for this position possesses exceptional practical skills, attention to detail, and is self-directed and motivated by challenging projects.

  • Build, characterize, and refine complex optical systems and subsystems
  • Apply rapid prototyping, testing, and analysis to assess feasibility of novel optical components
  • Build test fixtures and develop metrology as needed
  • Assemble and troubleshoot prototypes and beta-release medical devices

Key qualifications:

  • 4+ years designing and testing complex optical systems
  • Thorough understanding of geometrical optics, wave optics, and imaging systems
  • Proficiency with optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V, FRED), including sequential and non-sequential ray tracing, tolerancing, and stray light analysis
  • Proficiency building and characterizing optical systems
  • Experience with lens design
  • Proficiency with Python or C++
  • High level of attention to detail and intrinsic motivation
  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering or a related field. Advanced degree is a plus

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with clinical ophthalmic devices
  • Solid understanding of vision science
  • Experience with eye tracking technologies
