We are seeking a Prototype Lab Manager/Senior Machinist who will be responsible for our rapid prototyping space and support machining internal jobs for different teams and projects. Your primary focus will be maintaining the rapid prototyping area, which includes several 3D printers, a laser cutter, CNC machines, and manual machines. This role would also require managing a budget structure to recharge costs to company projects, maintaining an inventory, and managing your time. The secondary focus for this role will be to execute internal 3D printing and machining jobs as needed, such as setting up and running 3D prints or machining polymer or metal parts. The shop is a shared space, accommodating both jobs run directly by engineers and those managed by you.
Role responsibilities:
- Troubleshooting, maintaining, and qualifying tools
- Maintaining a budgeting system for the shop
- Building and maintaining shop inventory
- Organizing the shop and training team members
- Executing 3D prints as time allows
- Machining parts as time allows
Key qualifications:
- 6+ years hands-on experience in rapid prototyping
- 3+ years experience in machining
- Experience in various modalities of 3D printing beyond FFF
- Experience in CNC machining
- Experience in manual machining
- Experience in laser cutting
- Proficiency in using spreadsheets
- Drive to continuously improve processes
- High school graduate or equivalent
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience managing a lab or shop
- Experience with budgeting, quoting jobs, and estimating costs
- Familiarity with safety and facilities compliance
- Experience in repairing and qualifying tools
- Ability to reassemble items after disassembly
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, machinist certifications, or equivalent experience
Salary/Pay Range:
Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full-time position is $85,000 - $115,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
