Science is a clinical stage, vertically integrated technology company focused on solving some of neuroscience’s hardest questions and most serious unmet medical needs. We work to restore quality of life to those with debilitating conditions for which there are no treatment options, creating devices aimed at restoring vision, cognition, and mobility to patients who have lost it. To support progress across our industry, we provide state-of-the-art components and vertically integrated infrastructure for others to build on via Science Foundry.

Science is developing a biohybrid brain-computer interface to increase the number of interface channels by several orders of magnitude. We are expanding our pilot work on this subject, recently posted on bioRxiv, to develop a fully integrated cell-device hybrid that can potentially achieve over a million single-unit interface channels with the brain.

We are seeking a cell integration engineer who can help take our cell-device interface technology to the next level. Candidates can look forward to becoming a key contributor in a talented, driven, and interdisciplinary team focused on developing cell-based neural interfaces. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience in neural tissue engineering, are proficient working with a range of biomaterials, including functionalized hydrogels, and are skilled in tissue culture. Successful candidates will work closely with cell biologists, fabrication engineers, neuroscientists, and surgeons to drive cell-device scaffold development to enable robust survival, differentiation, and integration of engrafted cells while maintaining proximity to devices.

Role responsibilities:

  • Develop new formulations for implantable hydrogels
  • Develop in vitro experimental paradigms and perform experiments to test the effect of new formulations on neuronal viability and differentiation
  • Collaborate to improve techniques for loading cells into devices and surgically implanting them
  • Analyze experiments and present results

Key qualifications:

  • A track record of excellence and creativity in your field as demonstrated by publications, patents, success with commercialization or translation, or other notable achievements
  • A deep background in neural tissue engineering theory and practice
  • Practical experience functionalizing hydrogels with biologically active agents
  • Proficiency in materials engineering methods and techniques
  • Expert level sterile technique
  • Thrives when working collaboratively and tackling difficult technical challenges
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Commitment to a respectful and supportive work environment

Preferred qualifications:

  • Direct experience transplanting stem cells into the nervous system
  • Proficiency in analytical chemistry
  • Proficiency in proteomics
  • Background in biomaterials for nervous system grafts, for example ischemic stroke

Salary/Pay Range:

Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full-time position is $110,000 - $180,000 annually + equity + benefits.
