Science is a clinical stage, vertically integrated technology company focused on solving some of neuroscience's hardest questions and most serious unmet medical needs. We work to restore quality of life to those with debilitating conditions for which there are no treatment options, creating devices aimed at restoring vision, cognition, and mobility to patients who have lost it.

As part of the Vessel team at Science, you will work with a world-class team of scientists and engineers to develop methods for long-term normothermic organ perfusion to support organ transplantation and critical care. As a tissue engineering scientist, you will own the solution space for achieving vascularization of engineered tissue for long-term perfusion. Your expertise will be critical for ideating, testing, and refining technical approaches needed to sustain normothermic perfusion of explanted organs. Your background could be in tissue engineering, developmental biology, vascular biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field where you've established a track record of pushing beyond existing protocols and solving hard problems creatively.

Role responsibilities:

  • Develop solutions for achieving vascularization of engineered or explanted organs under stable normothermic perfusion.
  • Develop testing infrastructure to evaluate the efficacy of perfusion in a vascularized organ or tissue.
  • Lead efforts to characterize vessel formation, maturation, and function.
  • Develop and validate strategies to stably integrate vascularized tissues and perfusion circuits, including attachment strategies

Key qualifications:

  • Strong foundation in vascular biology and understanding of vessel formation
  • Demonstrated experience designing and optimizing tissue engineering approaches from first principles
  • Proven track record of innovative, frontier research that went beyond published methods, as evidenced by first author papers, patents or other achievements
  • Hands-on expertise with 3D tissue culture systems, bioreactors, or ex vivo perfusion platforms
  • Excellent sterile tissue culture techniques and primary cell handling
  • Meticulous experimental design, protocol documentation, and troubleshooting
  • Comfort with ambiguity and iterative failure as part of the discovery process
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to own a complex, multi-faceted problem and drive it to solution

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with organ-on-chip or perfusion-based tissue models
  • Background in biomaterials or scaffold design
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in developmental biology
  • Strong background in microscopy and other sensing techniques
