Science is an early stage company developing technologies for a range of serious unmet medical needs. We are unafraid to take difficult technical risks, secure in the knowledge that with a clear understanding of what we are doing and with support from powerful modern tools, more progress is possible than might be immediately obvious. Regardless of role or team, the two most important factors we look for in a candidate are evidence of exceptional ability and the addition of positive energy to the group. As a small, very early stage team in a largely unstructured environment, the ability to independently orient yourself to the problems that need to be solved and then follow through is essential.

We are seeking a motivated Histology Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for executing a range of histological processes on a variety of tissue samples, to support our research teams. Successful candidates are already experts at tissue processing and staining techniques and are familiar with histology best practices and automation tools.

Role responsibilities:

  • Process biological specimens including cells, organoids and whole tissues from a range of experimental systems through fixation, embedding, and sectioning (paraffin and frozen)
  • Operate cryostats and microtomes to cut thin sections of tissue
  • Perform both standard histology stains (H&E, trichrome, PAS, etc.) and help develop custom workflows
  • Run IHC and IF stainings on sections and whole-mount structures including antibody optimization and multiplexed panels
  • Image sectioned and whole mount tissue using slide scanners
  • Help maintain the histology laboratory, ensuring a clean and organized workspace
  • Follow standard operating procedures and communicate with researchers
  • Maintain an extensive biobank with rigorous sample and slide tracking

Key qualifications:

  • Expert at histological sectioning (paraffin and cryo) and a track record of clean, consistent sections
  • Able to handle a range of small, delicate or otherwise difficult tissues across different model organisms
  • Expert at using microtomes
  • Expertise at a range of standard histology techniques including but not limited to immunofluorescence and H&E
  • Strong proficiency with IHC and/or IF, including antibody optimization and the judgment to distinguish real signal from artifact
  • Experience with microscopy and slide scanners
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to keep accurate records
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Highly skilled at specialized microscopic imaging techniques (z-stacking, tiles, stitching)
  • Advanced proficiency in biological imaging (bright-field, epi-fluorescence and confocal)
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related field
  • Histopathology certification
  • Experience performing necropsy and transcardial perfusions
  • Experience with microscopy
